History of the NAB 2008

July 9, 2010, 06:33

In anticipation of the newest addition of NAB History, which will be complete sometime in July, I’m going to frequently repost each prior edition you can find 20052006, and 2007 here. For those that don’t know I have painstakingly went through each and every post by George R. R. Martin, line by line, and offered my opinion when appropriate. Why you may ask? To show that people DO have a reason for being upset and impatient. I always provide the date and title of his post, so if you think I’m misquoting George you can easily go search and find out yourself; however, I do provide links from time to time. Thanks for reading and I hope you find this to be an interesting and entertaining read.

You and I are about to embark upon a journey.  We have a rendezvous with boredom.  The Not-A-Blog in 2008  finally reached its maximum potential, not one that people go to for entertainment and information, but one that allowed George to reach into his junk drawer of his house and make a quick $9.95.

This year also marked the year where George made major progress with A Dance with Dragons: it got a cover, found an illustrator, and he finally finished that one chapter that he’s been working on for 6 years.

So, let us go forth with good cheer and stout hearts!

January 1st, 2008

Updates Coming

I’ve sent a new sample chapter from A DANCE WITH DRAGONS and an update on the current status of the book to my webmaster. Expect them to go up soon, on their respective pages.

Yes, we begin the year on a high not, not with ADWD being finished and on its way to the printers of course  The years have caused us to lower our expectations.   However, we do get a new sample chapter!  Just out of curiosity is a chapter finished when it makes it to the sample page??

(And no, the book’s not done. Didn’t I just say that in yesterday’s post?)

Ah yeah, but you also stated more times than I can remember that you weren’t going to update your update page until you finished, soooo…  Let’s see what some of Georges fans have to say:

ronson73 wrote: I work in a book store and i have decided that I am not reading anything else by this man until we get our book. I feel that if we do read the “other stuff” then we as fans are just encouraging him to slack on Dance. Mind you I am tempted like a heroin addict every time i pass the fantasy section to just break down and read what this wordsmith has written as a temporary “fix” of actual good writing. I will admit that i have peeked a glance or 2 at some of the wildcard stuff..BUT I WILL REMAIN STRONG

If Wild Cards is like heroin then heroin must be like dirty, nasty, sewage water, so no harm here.

mariness wrote: Dreamsongs I contained stories that grrm wrote well, well before ever starting to write A Song of Ice and Fire, so I’m not sure that republishing these counts as “slacking.”

Are you delusional? The only reason they’d publish recycled material is because there’s no new material to publish, and there trying to recoup all the money they doled out to George to write ADWD, but maybe your right, maybe he isn’t slacking.

elmobob14 wrote: I can’t wait!
I can’t wait until October 2008 . . . maybe.

Maybe? What do you mean maybe!   He’s hard at work, just ask mariness.  This guy doesn’t know how to slack.

elmobob14 responded to a question–>Based on George’s track record, I predict we won’t see DANCE until 2009. I just hope we’re not reading “hopefully I can get it to you in the fall” next year. (Incidentally, that’s what we were reading last year at this time).

Have you ever gone to the movie theater to watch a new movie and in the middle of it you feel like you’ve seen the movie before?

kevin_007 wrote: By George you’ve dont it once again. What a great chapter. Riviting! Goosebumps. Cant wait.

Did what again? Finish a chapter that’s probably going to be rewritten again? How do you keep your expectations so low?

Geez George, with all this talk of ADWD I almost forgot you had other books coming out.

It’s been a busy few weeks for DANCE. I have been working on a Dany chapter and a Bran chapter. (The Bran chapters remain incredibly hard to write, for what it’s worth, and this one is no different)..

Why do I have the feeling that he wrote all the easy parts and left the hardest parts for last, maybe that is the source of timeline discrepancies?

The Dark Sword miniatures have been selling up a storm, by the way, and we will soon be starting work on the second set….And if you haven’t grabbed the first set yet, it’s not too late. Order off the Dark Sword website..

A Small Request

Please don’t feed the trolls.

You know what? These have been so boring because they lack any kind of substance that, I’m almost willing to thank him for this comment.  It’s definitely the most entertaining of all his posts this year. Lets check out the comments.

polywogwog wrote:There is not a troll problem. The problem is that 99.9% of the people who post here are incapable of doing anything other than post;

“Oh Gidge, I love you! I do not even know you, but I read one of your books once so I feel connected to you in all facets of your life! I know that Feast for Crows sucked, but I don’t care, because we are friends! Lets talk together in olde english even though you are from a dumpy port town in NJ. Huzzah

Admit it that comment made you smile, and your wondering why it wasn’t censored.  He continues:

Anyone who does not post something to that effect is called a troll. Everyone here is an idiotic fanboy. They resent being called fanboy because they find it “cliche”, then they go ahead and call people trolls, an equally overused term.

The people here are idiots. There was a woman once that said that Gidge’s smile could light up the world, and she hoped that he would send his smile around the world to her… Believe it.

That up there is easily the most entertaining thing I read during the 2008 NAB.

brandonlc wrote: Apologies
Mr. Martin and everyone on this board,

After reading this I think at least part of this post was aimed at me. A couple of days ago I attempted to stop the troll who I call Douche bag and it degenerated into a flame fest that just got more and more out of hand.

My intentions were good but the result was not. I felt that by making myself a target to this individual I would deflect him from people who are only guilty of being nice people and coming to this board.

I’m sorry, but is George R. R. Martin 12 years old? Does he really need Brandon to ride in on his white stallion to save him from the frustrated fan that wants to know why every time he comes to this site he’s trying to be sold something?

Brandon continues:

THe guy thinks he knows something about me and thinks that his posts bother me, but since they are grossly innaccurate they are merely inept attempts to keep the flame war going. I was guilty of doing the same thing by repeatedly calling him a douche bag. He would spout some load of bull and I would respond with my typical retort.

I wonder if Brandon realizes that  he and George aren’t best friends, and because of that doesn’t care about Brandon?

Looking back I am sorry for doing it and I will not continue this behavior. In other words i fed the troll and I am sorry for it, I am man enough and mature enough to admit that I was wrong, something I doubt the troll in question is mature enough to do.

PLease be assured that this is the end of it from my end.

Give it up, your not that important.  I’m beginning to feel embarrassed for you.

grrm responded to Brandon Re: Apologies
Thanks, Brandon. I appreciate your good intent.

However, any internet veteran will tell you, the best way to deal with trolls is just to ignore them. It’s the attention that they crave. Nothing pleases ‘em more than creating flamewars.

Except there not trolls, they’re fans who’re frustrated by all the empty promises, deadlines that coming and passing for the past three years, and who were banned and censored, and now you’re calling them names.  Now you’re telling everyone that the best way to deal with your fans is to ignore them?

brandonlc responded to George with the typical rainbow colored vomit you’d expect: Thank you very much for responding and for being so understanding. I very much appreciate it, your words made me feel better about the whole affair as I was feeling rather ashamed of myself

Yup, that’s right Brandon it’s all your fault because your special.

balefont wrote: You’re a good egg, Brandon

Balefont,

You are going to have to translate for Brandon, he does not understand sarcasam because he is too dumb. Either that, or he did look at your face and figured, all joking aside, that you really do need a plastic surgeon. I am not sure which is worse.

One More Chapter Done

Well, I finished a chapter of the DANCE this morning. Which ordinarily would not be occasion for comment, but this was a Bran chapter that I’ve been struggling with for something like six years

I’m not an author, but I am a thinker, and it seems to me that the only reason why one chapter would take 6 years complete is one of two reasons:

1) Your not working on it.
2) You don’t have a clue on what your doing.

Anyway, that’s one done. (Unless I wake up tomorrow, reread what I’ve done, decide that I hate it, and tear the whole thing up. Which does happen from time to time).

WTF!  Does this really count as an update? Originally I thought so, but I’ve changed my mind because I don’t think just mentioning ADWD automatically counts as an update.  Which is how I was doing it.

Wild Cards Meets Ice & Fire

It’s April Fools so George offers us this parody, and like any good parody it offers a certain amount of truth to it.

The thing is, I got the poor Stark family into such deep trouble that I could no longer see any good, plausible way to get them out. I had written my poor characters into a deep, deep cave and the light was going out. No wonder I was having trouble. Why, I had created problems so severe that there was no way the Starks could hope to overcome them. Winterfell was doomed.

I believe he has an outline, but his outline sucks.  Which is why the first 3 books were so good, and why the rest will probably suck.

Winterfell is saved! The Wild Cards are coming to the rescue!

Yay.

The Others cannot hope to stand against Popinjay, Jetboy, and the Great and Powerful Turtle. So what if they can raise the dead? So can Hoodoo Mama….Modular Man, Cap’n Trips, Yeoman, Carnifex, Bubbles, Curveball, Dr. Tachyon, Water Lily, Fortunato, Troll, Midnight Angel, and the rest… they’ll set right all that’s wrong in Westeros and do it in short order.

Kind of makes you want to order the entire Wild Card series from George doesn’t it?

aulus_poliutos wrote: It could be even more fun. Make all those cool new Fantasy worlds a universe and allow interstellar travel. That way we can have Glokta in Westeros and Daenerys mxing up Malazan, Kvothe as mendicant in Terre d’Ange … the possibilites are endless. And Hal Spacejock should pilot the star ship, that way the worst possible combinations will be guaranteed. :)

And then you can start combining characters…like…like…the Easter Bunny and Spiderman, and…and…Santa Claus and The Incredible Hulk!

I’m back home again from the conventions in Blacksburg, Virginia and Madison, Wisconsin, and settling in for the big push….Anyway, I’m back now, and not going anywhere until late June, when I will be taking off on my long-anticipated trip to Ireland, Portugal, and Spain.

You definitely deserve a vacation that’s for sure.  If it’s one thing I know it’s that I’m not an author, so I can’t possibly understand how grueling those conventions can be.

Of course, I need to finish A DANCE WITH DRAGONS before I leave, or else my publishers will hunt me down and kill me. So that’s pretty much all I’ll be doing between now and then.

He’s just this close [-] to not finishing it.

Actually it’s not true that DANCE is all that I’ll be doing. I’ll also be editing the next Wild Cards books, SUICIDE KINGS, co-editing WARRIORS and SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH with Gardner Dozois, finishing the third Dunk & Egg novella, which is oh-so-close, and of course watching the NFL draft.

I’m a huge NFL fan too, and every year I watch the Draft, and by watching the draft I mean it’s on the TV while I’m working and I glance at it from time to time to see which player was drafted by which team.

Setting the Record Straight: HBO and A Song of Ice and Fire

This is a good time to point out that up until this year he talked a lot about ADWD, or at least he wasn’t very shy about it there were no superstitions either. Up until now he has updated ADWD a total of 5 times while he has talked about Wild Cards and his other Anthologies a total of 20 times, NFL 10 times, and when he wasn’t trying to sell us something directly he was telling us to rush to the store and purchase some kind of crap 17 times.  He told us who we should vote for for the Hugos more times than he mentioned ADWD. This is why people don’t think he’s working on the book! Not to mention, that every chapter he’s finished seems to have been started 6 years ago. Then he leaves on vacation every other week…

A Gentle Reminder

_____

Please stay on topic.

This is my Live Journal. My “Not-A-Blog.” My virtual living room, my home on the web, the place where I come to talk with distant friends. Sometimes it’s my soapbox, where I can rant about things that are annoying me, put forth my political views, burble about a movie I’ve seen, a book I’ve read, talk about NFL football, report on my travels, show off the latest addition to my collection of 54mm toy knights and medieval miniatures.

It’s lots of things, but mostly it’s MINE.

Is this a spoiled little boy or what. Stay on topic? Look at the totals I’ve been keeping!   Only a delusional retarded fanboy would ever seriously comment on anything on this blog!  There is nothing to talk about.  You don’t talk about your miniatures you try and sell them, and when I talk to my friends I like to hear what they have to say, I don’t try to sell them crap all the time, so screw you!!

I am perfectly aware that A DANCE WITH DRAGONS is late. There’s no need to remind me, thanks, I have plenty of editors and agents and publishers to do that.

Are you sure your aware of it? Because when I’m behind schedule, when I have a job to do it tends to cut into my free time; however, it seems like the exact opposite is true with you.

And if you want to comment on other matters… including, but not limited to, the lateness of A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, that’s fine, just go do it on your own blogs.

Instead of talking about the economy or the war or the other issues that confront the country, all of a sudden all they want to talk about is Obama serving on the board of a charity with a guy who was in the Weather Underground back in the 1960s.

Well the guy has admitted to bombing the Greenwich Village Townhouse, the NY City Police department, the US Capital, and the Pentagon, but that was a looooooooooooong time ago.

When a candidate, any candidate, engages in a campaign of character assassination, it says more about the character of the attacker than the target.

Monday Morning Blues

Last night, shortly after I made my post about yesterday’s Jets and Giants game, my office was broken into and burglarized.

(And no, they did NOT take my computers, so the hard drive where A DANCE WITH DRAGONS lives is still there, and safe, and I haven’t lost any work. And yes, I back up regularly, so even if they had made off with the hardware, I have all the finished text saved on disk. So you can all come down off that ledge, please).

What he’s actually saying is that a burglar saved us from another boring NFL post.  ROCK ON!

The most unsettling part of all this was the timing. I came over to the office last night after football to make my LJ post about the games and answer some emails. One of the mails in my in box was from a friend who wanted to come over and watch television.

Translation: Between working and watching TV I decided to phone it in.

But if I hadn’t gotten that email from our friend, I might have stayed in the office and continued to answer emails

You spent the day watching football then went to your office so you could post about the football game, and read a few emails and then went to a friends house to watch more TV, but if you hadn’t gotten the email, you may have stayed and read more emails.  At no time did he ever consider working.

I would have been here when the thief (or thieves) broke into the construction site….a shout from me would have sent them fleeing…but maybe not. I suppose I could have tried to drive them off with one of those replica swords

That would have been a funny sight!!  George R. R. Martin swinging a dull metal stick at you!   “Oh excuse me, as I get out of the way of your stick…” **Steps aside and pushes George to the ground**

Vance Book Delivered

_____

The Jack Vance tribute anthology, SONGS OF THE DYING EARTH, is complete

Whoopty Doo.

Now all I need to do is wrap up WARRIORS and SUICIDE KINGS and… yes… A DANCE WITH DRAGONS, and maybe I’ll be able to take a week off.

I don’t get why people defend this man.  Going by what he writes on his blog we might get ADWD someday, but that’s probably it. He starts a chapter one year and completes it 6 years later.

BUSTED FLUSHers Speak Out

_____

Hey, Santa

All I want for Christmas is the C-57-D….Damn. If only I’d finished DANCE. I might be able to afford it.

I don’t even know where to begin with this one.  You should have finished it because it was almost done back in 2005, almost done in 2006, almost done in 2007, and again almost done in 2008, and yet mysteriously it remains unfinished, but wait that’s right, I’m not an author, so I can’t possibly understand.

Same Old Jets

Yes. Same old Jets.  Same old NAB.

Our rendezvous with boredom has finally concluded, so you may go to sleep now.

If this proves anything it’s that anyone who follows this blog should not feel guilty for being upset to one degree or another.  Stay on topic he says when 5 times he gave an update, and I was generous too.  At least 32 times he tried to sell us something, and none of which was ADWD.  At least there is always 2009…

Is it just me or is the NAB history better now than when it was on Is Winter Coming? Have you added stuff? Anyway, it is a great read.

But you could make life simpler for yourself by categorizing his posts in just two categories:
    ADWD updates & Shit.

Actually, I deleted a lot of stuff out of the old post. Oh and by the way, isn’t the entire NAB shit even the ADWD updates?

Yeah it is rubbish, but at the very least it did give us FTBG.
