History of the NAB: 2005

June 13, 2010, 08:23

In anticipation of the newest addition of NAB History, which will be complete in early July, I’m going to frequently repost each prior edition here.  For those that don’t know I have painstakingly went through each and every post by George R. R. Martin, line by line, and offered my opinion when appropriate.  Why you may ask?  To show that people DO have a reason for being upset and impatient.  I always provide the date and title of his post, so if you think I’m misquoting George you can easily go search and find out yourself; however,  I do provide links from time to time. Thanks for reading and I hope you find this to be an interesting and entertaining read

…and so we begin in the very beginning.

Not A Blog

The NAB went live with this very post, and what was the very first thing that George posted?

I’m calling this “Not A Blog.”

I mean, I don’t have time to do a weblog. I don’t have the energy to do a weblog. There’s just no way I could do a weblog.

That…was definitely inspirational!! He continues:

Be warned. Days, weeks, and even months may go by with no new entries to this journal. If so, that doesn’t mean I’ve died. Just the opposite, actually. It probably means I’m busy doing stuff. It may even mean that I’m writing. After a long day at the computer writing fiction, the last thing I want to do is sit at the computer some more updating my weblog.

He may even be writing…how could we ever doubt this mans work ethic with that statement.

Last election I had a couple of political messages on my site that really irritated some of my visitors (and pleased even more, but never mind). There were various reasons for that, but one was that I stuck the commentary onto the page called ‘About A FEAST FOR CROWS.’ It was suggested that if I wanted to talk about politics, I should have a separate page for that. Well, no. If I had a political page, I’d need to update it, which would mean I would have to write a lot more about politics. No, thanks.

Why would people be irritated to read of your political leanings when they go to the AFFC page? Isn’t it obvious that the AFFC page is for political talk and NFL football updates?

You can obviously see why he’s considered the “American Tolkien” just by glancing at the titles of his posts can’t you?

Has it really been three months since my first post?

Dedication.  Confirmed.

Oh, one thing before I run… I have gotten a lot of emails asking about my “policies” at signings. Truth is, I have only one policy. I will sign old books as well as the new one, and I will sign as many books as you bring… but only three at a time. If you bring more, I will still sign them all, but after the first three you need to go back to the end of the line to give others a chance.

OK, so if someone shows up with a two-wheeler of A Feast for Crow books to be signed I can understand this because he’s looking to sell them rather than collect them.  However, if someone is willing to stand in line for 3 hours with all the Wild Card books, Anthologies, and 4 aSoIaF books, then he can sign them all. It doesn’t make any sense to make the poor guy run to the back of the line with a big pile of unsigned books after he’s already waited in line.

Kind of makes you wonder whether he puts as much effort into ADWD as he does with his post titles doesn’t it?

There were moments, especially in Ann Arbor and New York City, where it felt as though the signing lines would never end, and I would still be scrawling in books as the sun came up… but at least I had a comfortable seat. All of you who stood in those lines for hours at a time deserve an award for valor. Thanks for your patience… and for your kind words when at last you finally made it to the front.

….except for the people who brought more than 3 books. They probably didn’t have very many kind words for you when you told them to go to the end of the line, did they?

Just now, though, all I want to do is sleep, read my mail, and get caught up on my football games and the last six episodes of ROME.

1st reference to football!! Admit it, your salivating now… I wonder how the games went?

Aaaarrrgh!

George must have been feeling creative this day to come up with such an imaginative title.  By the way, this is the NAB’s first official football update. How can a professional author take the most exciting sport in the entire world and make it sound so boring? How did the Giants and the Jets do you ask?

You’d think with two teams, I’d at least have one kicker who could make a goddamned field goal. The Giants gave me three heart attacks, and the Jets added a fourth…

year’s end

He talks about AFFC, his book tour, meeting fans, NFL, Tiki Barber, Super Bowl, and then he squeezes this little tidbit in…

I have a big chunk of a new Dunk & Egg novella that I should be able to finish with a good solid week of work… and then I’ve got some dragons waiting for a dance. We’ll see how all that goes.

Yeah, we’ll see how that goes George….maybe 2006 will be a good year for aDwD….huh George?
